Carriers

The Parts of Medicare

Medicare is divided into “parts,” with each part providing coverage for different types of services. Having a solid understanding of the different parts can help you better engage with prospects and clients about their goals and needs.

Part A

Everyone is automatically enrolled in Medicare Part A. There is no premium to part A, which covers:


  • Inpatient care in a hospital
  • Skilled nursing facility care for a limited period of time
  • Nursing home care that is not custodial or long-term care
  • Hospice care
  • Home health care for a limited period of time

Part B

Part B is a low-cost optional coverage that expands upon the coverage in Part A. Part B coverage includes:


  • Preventive services like doctor visits
  • Clinical research
  • Ambulance services
  • Mental health
  • Limited prescription drugs

Part D

Medicare Part D is the most recent addition to the Medicare lineup. It provides coverage for a wide range of prescription drugs. Part D is an optional benefit that has a monthly premium payment, which is based on the individual’s income.

Medicare Advantage (Part C)

Medicare Advantage is a Medicare program that allows private insurers to bundle Medicare with coverage for other services that are not traditionally covered by Medicare. This includes things like vision, hearing, dental, physical therapy, enhanced home health care, medical devices, and much more.


Costs for Medicare Advantage policies vary widely based on the policy. Some policies provide robust coverage and have higher premiums. Others are more budget-friendly.
